Centering Hymn

"The Road To Emmaus" (Luke 24:13-45) John Penoyar, Hinesburg Vermont. Used with permission.

Were not our hearts burning as He spoke

Were not His words words we longed to hear

Were not our eyes opened in the breaking of the bread

Were not our hearts burning as He spoke

Our God is here He walks among us

When two or three of us are gathered in his name

Our God is here and he surrounds us

And all creation sings the glory of his name

And we shall rise, as he is risen

And though he promised us we did not understand

Yes we shall rise as he is risen

And we will know him when he calls to us by name.

Lectio Divina Process:

LECTIO (Read) During the first spoken reading, listen for the overall sense of the passage. Select  a word or phrase that captures your attention as though the Holy Spirit were flashing a light from the text to your heart, asking you to notice it. Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, allow your eyes to be opened and your heart to be melted as God speaks to you. If you choose, simply share the word or phrase with the group.

MEDITATIO (ReflectDuring the second spoken reading, listen for the feelings, sensations and connections that God's Word stirs in you. If you wish, share a connection you sense between the passage and this particular moment in your life.

ORATIO (Respond) During the third  spoken reading listen to your own heart for something that you want to express to God in response to the meanings and observations you are hearing. If you desire, share a prayer that you would like God and your siblings gathered with you to hear.

CONTEMPLATIO Rest- After the final sharing of responses, share the silence and attend once more to the presence of Christ among us. Let us hold a quiet space to hear God speaking in our hearts.

Mark 9:30-37

Prediction of the passion

They went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it, 31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again." 32 But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him. 33 Then they came to Capernaum, and when he was in the house he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the way?" 34 But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. 35 He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, "Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all." 36 Then he took a little child and put it among them, and taking it in his arms he said to them, 37 "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me."

Lord's Prayer  (recited together).

Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  for thine is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory, forever and ever. Amen.

 Closing Prayer

O God, our teacher and guide, you draw us to yourself and welcome us a beloved children. Help us to lay aside our envy and selfish ambition, that we may walk in your ways of wisdom and understanding as servant of your peace. Amen.
