Call to Prayer

Leader    Let Us gather in the lavish hospitality of our father Abraham and of our Triune God, Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit. (Gn. 18:3)

Gathered:  Lord, it is good for us to be here. (Mt. 17:4)

Lighting the Christ candle

Leader   Jesus Christ is the Light of the world.  (Jn. 1:4)

Gathered:   The Light no darkness can overcome (Jn. 1:5)

Lectio Divina Process:

LECTIO (Read) During the first spoken reading, listen for the overall sense of the passage. Select  a word or phrase that captures your attention as though the Holy Spirit were flashing a light from the text to your heart, asking you to notice it. Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, allow your eyes to be opened and your heart to be melted as God speaks to you. If you choose, simply share the word or phrase with the group.

MEDITATIO (ReflectDuring the second spoken reading, listen for the feelings, sensations and connections that God's Word stirs in you. If you wish, share a connection you sense between the passage and this particular moment in your life.

ORATIO (Respond) During the third  spoken reading listen to your own heart for something that you want to express to God in response to the meanings and observations you are hearing. If you desire, share a prayer that you would like God and your siblings gathered with you to hear.

CONTEMPLATIO Rest- After the final sharing of responses, share the silence and attend once more to the presence of Christ among us. Let us hold a quiet space to hear God speaking in our hearts.

Mark 9: 38-43  John said to Jesus, "Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he was not following us." 39 But Jesus said, "Do not stop him, for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40.  Whoever is not against us is for us. 41 For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward. 42 "If any of you cause one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea. 43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire.

Lord's Prayer  (recited together).

Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  for thine is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory, forever and ever. Amen.

 Closing Prayer

Lord God, friend of those in need, your Son Jesus has untied our burdens and healed our spirits. May we love you with our whole being and willingly share the concerns of our neighbors. May your followers of all denominations become signs of unity and loving wholeness. May we recognize your presence in the efforts of all people of faith and good will. Amen.
